Colourful Wedding Celebration

For Marjorie del Mundo and Derek Leung, getting married meant bringing together friends and family from at least three cities: Calgary (where Derek is from), Vancouver (Marjorie’s hometown) and San Diego (where the couple now live). Their colourful wedding celebration was also a blending of traditions, reflecting Marjorie and Derek’s Chinese and Philippine heritage.
For their ceremony, the couple chose the Celebration Pavilion at Queen Elizabeth Park, a place of special meaning since it was where Marjorie’s parents had taken their own wedding photos many years earlier.
The sweet ceremony was followed with a reception in the elegant Spanish Ballroom at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. A graphic designer, Marjorie designed and assembled many elements of the wedding herself, with help from Derek and family and friends. Among her creations were the invitations, programs, cake design, cake topper, wedding favour boxes, and the table numbers telling stories from their relationship. The couple even found a way to incorporate their love of both Star Trek and penguins!
“The day was made even more special because we incorporated aspects of our heritage into our wedding,” explains Marjorie. The pair performed the traditional Chinese tea ceremony before the reception, with the bride donning a modern take on the Chinese qipao. During part of the reception, the couple changed into traditional Philippine outfits made of pineapple fibres, while performers from the Philippine Cultural Arts Society of BC dazzled the guests with three Philippine dances.
“Friends and family gathered from near and far to celebrate with us and, for this, we are extremely grateful,” says Marjorie.
